Moncton is a city in southeastern New Brunswick, situated along the Petitcodiac River near the head of the Bay of Fundy. It serves as a major centre for transportation, commerce, education, and culture in Atlantic Canada. The city is officially bilingual and has strong English-speaking and Acadian influences. Its location beside the tidal river gives Moncton a distinctive natural feature within an urban setting, while downtown streets contain shops, restaurants, public art, and heritage buildings. Moncton also provides convenient access to coastal communities, beaches, and other attractions across southeastern New Brunswick.

Moncton’s cultural identity is closely connected to its Mi’kmaq and Acadian heritage. The area was originally used by the Mi’kmaq, while Acadian settlers established a community along the Petitcodiac River known as Le Coude, meaning “the elbow.” Later development was shaped by shipbuilding, maritime trade, and the railway, which became an important part of the city’s economy and transportation network. Acadian culture remains especially visible through French-language arts, music, literature, and community events. Moncton’s bilingual character also makes it an important cultural meeting point between Francophone and Anglophone communities in New Brunswick.

The Petitcodiac River is one of Moncton’s defining attractions because of its tidal bore, a wave that travels upstream as the Bay of Fundy tide enters the river. The bore arrives twice each day and can reach between 0.5 and 1 metre in height. Bore Park provides a central viewing location along the riverfront. Other notable attractions include Resurgo Place, the Magnetic Hill illusion, Magnetic Hill Zoo, and the Moncton Museum. The city’s parks and trails add recreational space, while nearby attractions such as Hopewell Rocks provide opportunities to experience the dramatic tidal environment of the Bay of Fundy.

Moncton’s food culture reflects its Acadian and Maritime setting, with seafood, locally produced ingredients, and traditional Acadian dishes represented in restaurants and markets. The Moncton Market is a longstanding downtown gathering place where vendors offer prepared foods, baked goods, produce, and locally made products. One distinctive Acadian dish associated with the wider region is poutine râpée, a grated-potato dumpling traditionally filled with salted pork. Another local feature is the city’s connection to Acadian celebrations, including Tintamarre, a noisy street procession held as part of National Acadian Day festivities. These traditions highlight Moncton’s bilingual and multicultural character.
